How can I make marzipan at home?

If you start with store-bought almond paste, it is quite easy. Basically, all you do is knead in powdered sugar until the paste won't take any more. Shape and eat. Yum!
I have tried making the almond paste at home from fresh almonds. The result didn't quite taste the same. I'm not sure why, but suffice it to say this is a much more difficult route to take.
