I have one dog who had parvo, and she was treated for it. My boyfriends Dog ( who has her shots) just gave birth to her puppies and I am scared that they are going to get Parvo because they cant get shots for 6 weeks ( Or so I've read) I also heard that as long as the are nursing, they are immune to it... I just dont know... I would think that it would be transmitted through the milk to the puppy but i know NOTHING about this... Please Help! I do not have the money to save another pup from parvo... ( it is very expensive!)

Your puppies are in grave danger, as they are in the home where parvo was..Yes, Mom's immunities are passed through the milk, and will certainly help until they are about 6 weeks old..However, they are in danger of getting it about a week after weaning, if not before. I would certainly call your vet about this, as he may want to give them a Parvo-only shot, that is formulated just for nursing puppies.

You can'r protect them by just keeping them out of the area where the other dog lived, as it is tracked on your feet, and the mom dog's feet, from anywhere they go..so, be sure to call your vet. ( I have dealt with way too much Parvo!)

No they are not immune, that is why it kills puppies. Antibodies from the mom can interfere with the vaccine's effectiveness which is why pups get parvo vaccine when they are 6 weeks old.

Keep the puppies away from any other dogs. Keep people away from the puppies.

If you or anyone else has contact with other dogs, wash thoroughly before being near the pups.

The mother and pups should not go anywhere near anything which could have been contaminated when your pup had parvo. The ground where your pup pooped can stay contaminated for 5 months.

Puppies are NOT immune to parvo unless they have the series of shots. My next door neighbor's dog had puppies, and during the time they were nursing (mom had PV shots) two died of parvo. I would do everything possible to keep the puppies away from the diseased parvo animal, or the yard/toys/blankets/food bowls of the parvo dog. Parvo can live in the ground for years and it is very contagious. Also, you may be able to call your vet and get their advice for free over the phone. Best wishes to your puppies.

Boyfriends pups is fairly well protected while it is nursing from are healthy mom and for a week or two afterwards.

This take a great risk if you don't start vaccinating starting about 6 weeks of age.

In puppies (2 months old or younger) parvo may be the cause of sudden deaths.

The virus is dispersed through the stool into and onto kennels, yards, pens, parks and so forth. This virus remains potentially infective to other dogs for at least a month and apparently for up to 2 years! Treatment if often effective...but often not.

So PLEASE get your puppies vaccinated starting at 6 weeks of age (sooner if being bottle fed), make sure you don't skip the boosters, and maximize your pet's general health and immune system with high quality nutrtion, parasite control, and loving care.

If Boyfriends puppys is vomiting and/or has diarrhea, take them to your veterinarian immediately. Do not wait. It is crucial for their life and important to recovery to test for Parvo and begin treatment.

Treatment for the Parvo virus consists of supporting the dog by preventing dehydration and using antibiotics to help prevent a very likely secondary infection.

Puppies are very susceptible to parvo especially at birth because they have no antibodies to fight it off. They will get the antibodies needed from their mother milk but it takes awhile. Make sure you pups are not around other animal or where the other dog that had parvo is. Parvo virus can live in carpet, clothes, on floors etc... unless you have disinfected all of the areas the other dog was around.

Good Luck!!!

They can have some immunity from the mother. How much and for how long is the question.
The mom had her shots, but when. Did she get the puppy series as a pup?? How old is she now. When was the last booster????
All these things would need to be answered to have a clue. Still, the puppies could bet parvo.

Parvo can live in a house or yard for up to 8 years unless all the infected area is properly treated.

No puppy can be immune to parvo.

The puppies need to get all of their shots to be immune from parvo. Don't let them go to any parks, groomers, kennels, until they are fully immune. Have them do their business in the back yard, set aside a small area in the yard for them to do this in. All in all just keep them away from other dogs for 4 months and until they get all of their shots. Good luck

No they are not immune at birth. This is why they need a vaccine.

If you have one dog who has Parvo, the others most likely do. It is highly contagious. Get them all to a vet NOW.

If you don't have the money to care for your pets, you shouldn't have them. This is common sense.
