Think about this...
How many people have been killed because of religion?
How many wars have been fought in the name of religion?
It would be much easier to count the wars that were fought over everything else.

What are you basing this on? 97% of the world's population is religious, and until a few centuries ago religion was not a choice at all. Even now, most of the STAUNCHLY religious people are born into that title, regardless of their own personal piety, and have no other choice than to be identified as a member of a specific religious group.

Here is a better question: why do so many STAUNCHLY religious people do good things? And what constitutes a Staunch religious belief? How can you objectively judge whether or not a person is staunchly religious?

I agree with the above answer that religion in and of itself is only as powerful has a human can make it but God is able to do more than we can imagine. The temperament of your religion (staunch or not) doesn't take away the fact that Christians are still fallible human beings just as susceptible as anyone else. Evil exists in so many forms you can't make something more evil than something else.

Depends on the religion. Jim Jones poisoned hundreds of people with kool aid, David Koresh had sex with underaged girls all in the name of their "religions". The Middle East is in chaos because of religion. Your question should have been, "Can God stop people from doing evil things?" and the answer would be yes He can.

The Holy Spirit (if He is in that person) is extremely powerful. The problem exists that a person can quench the Holy Spirit if that person is set on obtaining a sinful goal but not without guilt. (Free will)
Also, there are always wolves in sheep's clothing that make themselves out to be something they are not.

No, religion is not "powerful" enough to override free will. "Religious" people are still human, and humans are still imperfect. All humans sin, including the most "religious", though many kinds of sin are far less rampant among those who remain close to God, than they are among the ungodly.

Religion is a man made box that holds power only in the fear it can cast on its subjects.

God on the other hand, IS powerful enough to stop things, but He has graciously given us free will so we aren't just little robots walking around praising Him all day. Aren't you glad that He gave us the choice?

Well when you have a religion that is based on do whatever you want and ask for forgiveness, and as long as you believe in this god concept, you are wiped clean, it makes it easy to have a deplorable character.

If it truly was "brainwashing" as some atheists claim, then you'd think it would be powerful enough to stop them, eh?
