Someone hacked into my girlfriend's yahoo and myspace accounts. They have changed the password and information on the yahoo account, so we can no longer access it. On myspace, they have compiled messages sent to several of her friends relating to an argument between her, my mother, and myself. They sent that compiled message to my mother and me, as well as put it in a bulletin for all of our friends to see. Those were private messages.

Is there anything we can legally do to this person. Any way to find out who it is? Any charges we can bring this person up on? Her mother knows some investigators, but is it actually possible to find out who did it?

It's really not worth the time. It would be one thing if the hacker had pulled out credit card information and had bought a bunch of stuff without authorization because then you'd be able to show actual damages, but if this person only changed passwords and sent out some private messages, the courts are going to consider this a minor inconvenience at the most. As a result, your girlfriend wouldn't be able to sue for damages and the police probably wouldn't even bother prosecuting. Best thing to do is for your girlfriend to set up new accounts and check her computer system for spyware, then make sure no one else uses her computer if possible and she shouldn't log on to any of her accounts anywhere but from her home computer.

Yes there is a way. You can actually trace where the change took place even if they used a proxy to get there. Go to a chat forum by doing a search and start posting. There are alot of "Geek Forums" out there and thats where you will find the "Best of the Best".

I'm guessing that the someone is a person that knows your girlfriend or they wouldn't take the time to write those letters. A true hacker is looking for money or identity and could careless of someones reputation.

Its called fraud or ID theft for laymens. It would take a decent amount of cash to entice investigators to track and prosecute the hacker, good luck!

Does she know anyone who would like to get back at her? Maybe someone jelouse of her relationship with you? I know that sounds odd, but it must be someone who knows of her somehow...
