My mother ( and my 40 year old not working in ten years brother) after my mother's house burned down. I am realizing just how mean and evil she is. If I say up, she says dow. She is also deliberately hurtful. I want her out but I can't put her out. She then says that I will be punished for disrespecting my mother. Isn't respect mutual? Any advice?

Eph 6:1-3 Children, obey your parents because you belong to the Lord, for this is the right thing to do. Honor your father and mother. This is the first of the ten Commandments that ends with a promise. And this is the promise: If you Honor your father and mother, you will love a long life, full of blessing.

My mother was also very difficult in the same way, and as a Christian I struggled to find a way to respect her even though she continually emotionally hurt and abused me. I went through years of this until I finally came to the conclusion that she didn't have a clue about what she was doing. Like Jesus said on the cross, Forgive them Father, for they know not what they do.
When I finally accepted the fact that I could never change her, or stop her, it was like letting go of all that pain. Afterwords it hurt but I was able to give the pain to the Lord immediately instead of nursing it inside my heart.
My mother died last spring and I can only say that I loved her and miss her dearly. I don't miss the pain and suffering but I do understand that she loved me in her own way in that she never let me go hungry if I was without a job, and she baby sat my kids for years. I saw that there was a lot of goodness in her as well.

If you're looking for a biblical reference, you are going to be out of luck. The bible, almost unquestioningly, supports that respect is a one way street from the child to the parent. I would agree that respect is mutual and that not giving a parent who acts like a child everything they want is not so much disrespectful as it is prudent (I, too, have a parent who behaves in an abusive way and then demands respect).

Respect is a two way street and if the scriptures say honor your Father and Mother, then that means no matter what they do you have to find some way of honoring them. This was hard for me to come to grips with but eventually I discovered it's the right and best thing to do.

Ephesians 6: 1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. Ephesians 6: 2 Honour thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise; Ephesians 6: 3 That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.

Respect is mutual and MUST be earned by all. The bible says to honor thy mother and father. Tell her she is hurtful and its straining your relationship. She lost her house and most likely everything in it and that hurts. Talk to her and you'll probably find out it has alot to do with losing so much of her life.

no actually here let me get the verse.
Proverbs 27:10
10 Do not forsake your friend and the friend of your father,
and do not go to your brother's house when disaster strikes you—
better a neighbor nearby than a brother far away.

there's a verse im sure u can use...

you should tell here that theres nowhere in the bible that says you have to take her in, respect and providing for are very different.

Kicking your brother out is not a problem. Your mother is another issue. The commandment of honoring ones father and mother is fairly absolute. While one isn't required to place himself into an abusive situation, if one is in the presence of a parent who is verbally abusive, one is expected to suck it up. The only solution is to get her to move into her own place. Once done, you never have to see her again.

Deuteronomy 5:16
"Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God has commanded you, so that you may live long and that it may go well with you in the land the LORD your God is giving you.

Jesus is the truth, the way and the life!

"Hear O Israel, the Lord is our God, the Lord is One"
