There are free windows registry cleaning programs, just do a search.

Make sure to back up your computer before you mess with the registry though.

The registry is where windows stores information about all of the different programs, and file type associations, if you mess it up, you can kill windows.

I use Abexo Free Registry Cleaner.

http://www.download.com/Abexo-Free-Registry-Cleaner/3000-2094_4-10434887.html

from my understanding, here is what it does:

it goes through all the keys and searches for referenced files which are no longer on your computer. I.E. if a key has a value pointing to a file or program on your computer (c:/Program Files/Adobe/flash.exe) and you have uninstalled flash and that directory no longer exists, it notices it and will remove that registry key.

I'm sure there are much more complicated algorithms for finding obsolete keys, but thats a basic example.

RegClean analyzes Windows Registry keys that are stored in a common location in the Windows Registry. It finds keys that contain erroneous values, and after recording those entries in an UNDO.REG file, it removes them from the Windows Registry.
