Internet terminology, a troll is a person who enters an established community such as an online discussion forum and intentionally tries to cause disruption, often in the form of posting messages that are inflammatory, insulting, or off-topic, with the intent of provoking a reaction from others.

Trolls come and go.
One troll who currently graces us wiht his presence is Johnny Rebel, who repeatedly posts inflammatory messages about black people.
A troll is not the same as a person who posts provocative messages intended to make us think. Such messages, though a bit eccentric, are on topic and require far more time and energy to post than a typical troll message. Also, they are not intended to be abusive. About half of the athiests who post here fit this description.
Instead, trolls are characterised by repeated formulaic messages that are abusive to others, often with foul language, and reflect very little thought or intellectual development.
I personally don't understand the motovation of trolls. I've posted a message or two that has inadvertently pushed people's buttons and gotten angry replies, and I find the experience most unpleasant. I don't understand why some people go out of their way to repeatedly annoy other people, as if they seem to get some sort of enjoyment out of the angry replies they receive. They remind me of the kid in grade school who gets his jollies by throwing rocks at other kids or pulling other kids' hair.
The term troll is not a new term, nor is it coined by Yahoo. In its current meaning it's been around since the early days of online communities, somewhere in the 1980's. It's thought to come from the word trawling or trolling in fishing, or from patrolling. Like a trawler or patroller, they move quickly thru an area, dangling bait and looking for signs of interest or disturbance. Here, though, their motivation mystifies me. A fisher trawls for fish, and a cop looks for trouble as part of their job. But what moves the common internet troll? What is his payoff? It is a mystery to me.

Trolls are people that specifically say things just to upset people and cause a fight.

For example....

You know all those idiots that posts about how terrible black people are? THOSE are trolls. They know how badly that will be received, yet they post it anyway.

A troll is someone who is looking for a fight or argument & will typically make it worse by trying to defend themselves or by posting something designed to make people argue.

"Trolls" is used by Yahoo as a name for people who abuse Answers (and other Yahoo services) with obscene question, bad language, harassing people, etc.

People who come here simply to harrass others. Most of the atheists on the board fall into that category.
