My boxer (male, 9 months old) just started acting funny a couple of hours ago. I don't think it is anything medical/physical. My mother (who the dog usually adores, he is her baby) just moved in with us about 3 weeks ago. This morning he was acting fine, then started to look at the ceiling and get the shakes. My mother says it's because the spirit of her mother tagged along with her to this house, and now the dog is picking up on it. At first I thought "ok, whatever old woman" but now since she has said this.....the dog is trying to avoid her at all costs. This is the woman he is always around and sits with all day on the couch. I dismissed it at first, but it has been about 2 hours and it's not getting any better.

I can't believe I am saying this.....but could he be picking up on something. I also wondered about if she hurt him in some way, but my mother would never hurt any animal.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I doubt it's a "spirit". Something else is going on, maybe something is in the celing. Our dog, a fawn boxer, shakes and cries when he sees another dog, when it gets in striking distance he attacks it! Ask you mom if she did anything to him or scared him. I suggest that you watch him and pay attention to what he does. Remember they can hear and smell things you can't.

He could be picking up on the fears and anxieties of this PERSON. I doubt it's a spirit in your house, but dogs generally catch on to the moods and stresses in the people they are around, if this person is overly anxious, the dog may be picking up on it.

You need to relax, the more you act like something is WRONG, the more you are inadvertantly telling the dog that he should be worried about something. Act like nothing is going on, and he'll figure out there's nothing to be upset about.

It's only 2 hours... he'll get over it if everyone else does too.

Your mother's explination could be right on. My parents house is haunted and one night I was home alone with my parents dog in the house (his name is Shilo). Shilo was sleeping and woke up right as I felt something watching me from the hallway and he watched something move into the kitchen, about 15 feet away, and I looked where he was looking and couldn't see anything (he wasn't looking at the floor). He was watching one of the ghosts. Your dog will probably get used to her eventually but since she is new around the house your dog will act funny for a while.

It sounds more like your dog may be having small seizures. I would watch his behavior over the next couple weeks, note any unusual actions, then go to the vet. Seizures are very scary for your pet because they know something is wrong and that something is going to happen to them but they don'' know how to stop it. The spirit of the mother thing just isn't right.

He may have just had a bad dream about her, when he took a nap..If he isn't better by tomorrow, he should see a vet, to make certain there isn't something going on that is causing him pain, that he is relating to her being there..Even joint pain can cause him bad dreams..
As he is nine months old, the French toast may have awakened worms, and caused him pain, that he relates to her..Many foods 'wake up' parasites, and when they (the parasites) get rowdy, they cause pain..
That is why people say.".Potatoes give dogs worms", and the list of foods is endless..It is because fried potatoes wake up the worms, and then some are expelled in the poop, so it is assumed that the potatoes (or whichever food) 'caused' them..

Not to come across as mean...but I would think that dog's recognize something isn't right in a human being.

If your mother said that, I probably would have thought ... "Cr@p...my mom's losing her marbles".

And since the dog was your Mom's "baby", I think the dog senses somethings wrong with her mind also.

Interesting.... looked at the ceiling, huh..... Dogs are undoubtedly very perceptive and have awesome ability to sense, see and hear things we can't. Keep on observing him.

It really sounds as though the dog is having seizures. Take him to a vet.
