they do Hapkido here in NZ, but used to do TKD, and the police still got bashed. they still are.
dont say that they cant strike back, because if you have human survival wired into your brain (and we all do) you would do what it took to drop an opponent, regardless of rules not to.
the trouble is that criminals are not couch potatoes, but drug fried, thugs that can fight. the police really need to get with that program and fight fire with fire, minus the drug use.
as long as the police are trained to be weak, via rules and regulations and fight training, they will always lose. I thought about joining but until the public stop crying over them shooting criminals, there is no hope.
they all get trained, just not tat any level or amount needed to effectively make a difference in an altercation. adrenaline destroys most peoples technique finesse, and then you have nothing but hay makers left.
shame really.

There is a lot of misconceptions here about law enforcement. But to answer your question yes times have change, the laws have change and tactics have change. I am a federal agent and a martial arts instructor as well. I am also a defensive tactics instructor for law enforcement officers. My experience is that the training for law enforcement officers is very limited. Its up to the individual officer to stay proficient. Some departments have requirements where you must re-certify in your defensive tactics every quarter or every year. We are still using a lot of controls, locks etc. but we are seeing more BJJ and MMA everyday.
For everybody else what you call a tonfa is a PR-24 for Law enforcement and is rarely used anymore. We use collapsible steel batons now a days. As far as laws, every department must have a use of force continuum that determines the amount of force we could use in an altercation. This of course is dictated by case law mostly from cases like Graham VS. Connor.
Some departments are also using American versions of Taiho Jutsu. The biggest difference for us now is that we have to be very careful with the techniques we used to remain within a certain use of force model. Of course criminals couldn't care less. So a lot of the deadlier techniques, specially chokes are out of the question until you get to deadly force levels.
I hope I answer your question. Email me if you have some more specific questions.

they should train them how to use a tonfa properly and allow them to be able to actually use them, not like they do in la though.that would be a step in the right direction.as we all know though theres no easy answer, especially considering the fact that criminals have more rights than we do.all police have some type of physical training usually hapkido and simular tactics no particular style really.

England i dunno what is cumpulsery but my mate in the force said they they can put thier name down and do anything. boxin,g Jiu-jitsu anything that helps them on thier way. as most people say on this that it depends which country. each have thier own laws and techniques. i have seen a documentry about japaneze teaching the police how to use samurai swords. think it was kendu or something simular to the samurai art

Police are slaves to a crooked system. If they read this here is a fact financial terrorism is rampant in America.
