It's true, you don't necessarily need any equipment, even to do cardio. But if you must, I would recommend the elliptical. It IS lower impact for your joints (knees!) which is important. Just as a rough estimate, the you can get a cardio workout similar to running with the impact of walking.

To tone you really should actually do strength training. Light weights to start. You can find all sorts of videos that are cardio AND strength, or videos that are just strength. You can use bottles of water, potatoes in sacks, bags of beans...

Probably the most effective cardio that will tone your legs is the stairmaster, though. And really if you have a set of stairs, forget the machines. Climb the stairs! But pace yourself, and keep proper form to protect those joints. Lost fat requires cardio.

I prefer the elyptical because it is lower impact on my joints than a tread mill. I've had two pieces of Nordic Track Equipment, the most recent and elyptical machine. It was in the $900-$1000 ( brand new )range a couple years ago and works just as well as it did on day one. Very durable equipment. I continue to use it 5-6 times a week, 30 minutes a shot. You must be committed to spend this money, it's an awful expense for a clothes hangar. In the Midwest, we have a place called 2nd Wind exercise equipment. Otherwise check nordictrack.com Good luck!

Although it is expensive Precor is the best you can get. It is best to pay more because it will last longer than buying a cheaper version. As you lose weight you should add in Pilates exercises to tone up your tummy, thighs and butt.
