If you are authorized to live off base, rank doesn't matter, you are entitled to BAH and BAS. If you are married BAH does increase. BAH = Basic Allowance for Housing. BAS = Basic Allowance for Subsistence.

E-5 and above with and without dependants can both live off post and recieve BAH, however the BAH for a married E-5 is higher then that of a single E-5. We have an E-4 here in my husbands unit who lives off post though, not sure why or how that works...from what i understood only E-5 and above could chose to live off post, im not sure. I do know the BAH rates are different though. Hope that helps answer this for ya!

Anyone who is authorized to live off-base must receive BAH, regardless of rank. If the housing office says you should live in the barracks or on-post housing (for those who have dependents) and you move off post you have to move your stuff, or pay someone to do so, and you are not eligible for BAH.

As a retired military (they called it BAS (Bachelors Allowance for Subsistence).....anyone who lives off base gets an allowance. However, if you are married with dependents, that increases the amount (as I recall).

If you are required to live off post, then they have to pay you BAH, now, if you choose to, and there is on-post NCO housing for single NCO's. They don't have to.
