Energy RDAs for healthy, full term infants are as follows:
Age Energy Recommendations (kcal/kg/d)
0-6 months / 108
To Provide 108 kcal/kg/d
Infant's Weight Expected Total Daily Intake (in ounces)
Pounds kg 20 kcal/oz
4.5 / 2 / 11
6 / 2.7 / 15
8 / 3.6 / 19
10 / 4.5 / 24
12 / 5.5 / 30
To estimate energy requirements and recommended formula intake for an individual infant:
* Obtain infant's weight in kg. If measurement is taken in pounds, convert ounces to a decimal value of a pound (each ounce is .0625 of a pound) and multiply by .454.
* Multiply weight in kg by 108 kcal/kg to get estimate of total energy needs.
* Divide by 20 to get number of ounces of 20 kcal/oz formula.
so your baby weighs 5.98kg (I'll say 6 to make it simple)
6 X 108 = 648 calories a day total
648 / 20 = 32 ounces a day total
I disagree with the above post, this is the correct formula to determine the total caloric requirements for an infant (not the starting point to maintain hydration as is stated) Note also that a doctor is NOT trained to access diet for questions related to diet you should be asking a dietitian or nutritionist

Thats about the same weight and age as my son. And he drinks 4.5 ounces every three hours. But every baby is different. My first child now almost 4 and only 40 lbs ate 6-8 ounces by three months, so it really depends on the baby.

When my son was 3 month old he was eating 3-4 ounces every 3-4 hours. Every baby is different let him eat as much or as little as he wants. He will be going in soon for his 4 month check up discuss it with your dr the only formula they use is to make sure that he maintains hydration so they will give you the least amount he should intake.

I dont really know how much he should be eating/drinking but when both my boys were that age our doctor told us to let them eat as much as they want, meaning if they will take 6 oz per sitting and they want it every 3 hours then let them.
I really think that you should talk to the doctor about it though because they seem to really know what is better. Because each child is different.
Good Luck!
Hope that I could be of some help.

A baby will only feed as much as is neccessary. Once they've got a full belly then they stop. It's only as they get older that they eat for the sake of eating so feed little and often with a bigger feed closer to bed time to help them sleep longer.

Every baby is different.... but I think my baby was probably having six 6 oz. bottles per day. She didn't necessarily finish them all.
