i came out to my mom last week. She was talking some politics with me and then i slowly tried to divert the duologue towards Islam(She's a muslim), and then i started attacking it, and it turned into a big argument. then i told her i no longer believe in god. she wasn't angry at me, she kinda took a defensive side and started justifying her beliefs to me (and herself). I became emotional and started giving her evidence and stuff but then i noticed she was way too attached to her beliefs and was happily ignorant about the reality, so i decided to just let her believe in whatever makes her feel at piece. i don't know if your parents are like that though, my mom told me she was an atheist as a teenager but it was only a phase. maybe that's why she didn't try to force her beliefs on me. but anyway, once i told her nothing really changed, except we occasionally have some heated debates, which are kinda fun.

You became an atheist after watching the National Geographic channel? Good thing it wasn't Cartoon Network.

Tell them nothing or tell them you are agnostic, if you think they would be better with that. Unless you still live with them and really don't wish to attend church or other religious activities, it is kinder to let them think what they will. Atheism is wonderful, and I welcome you to the truth, but your parents do not deserve the truth about you if they can not handle it.
If you do decide to tell them, buy them Sam Harris' "Letter to a Christian Nation", its short, not obnoxious, and a concise bit of atheist literature for them to read.

for the record its wrong of your parents to hate anyone, and im assuming they are christian, figures. BTW i know many atheists that dont have a problem with Buddhism, they say it goes well with Atheism because there's no deity involved (according to them anyways) I dont mind that youre an atheist, but in some way i feel like youre doing it to get back at your parents for hating atheists, I agree with the above posters that agnostics are more logical than atheists.

Tell them as you feel, how their religion does not work for you, they will be upset but their mind will expand as you help them evolve into a world of free thought,,,, it will hurt but we all need it to grow.... even you, some day will be surprised that your beliefs will change and evolve..... but be flexible so it doesnt hurt......get it?.....
love one other person unconditionally..... and love will open a world beyond science.......

Is this something you need to tell them?
Gradual might be the way to go. When they state something that is counter to know science (like creation of the earth) correct them.
Make them realize that scientific fact is more relevant that religious opinion.

Tell them that you're atheist. If they object, punch them in the face. Repeat the process until they accept it.
Or just tell them you're agnostic. Nobody gets offended by agnostics.

Kill them and drink their blood, thats what they'd be expecting....
Actually just start engaging them in questions of faith, failing that just don't talk about it, I have many devout friends that I never talk about matters of religion with, at least not sober.
and whats it got to do with Evolution btw?

If you want them to know then just tell them flat-out that you are an atheist.
