Am I correct in that I think that the parables and stories from Jesus that start out by saying "a certain" (person) are the ones that are true stories and all the others are just illustrations to convey a point. Such as luke 18:10 and Luke16:1

That is correct. When Jesus began with,"A certain...." It wasn't a Parable, it was a True Story about a real person, and a real event.

i wouldnt say that you are correct or not correct. quite frankly i dont think real religious churches know. churches like the catholic, orthidox, anglican and maybe just maybe lutheran. i dont think they know whether the parables are actual event or just, well a parable. see the definition of a parable is a short story with a moral point. you have to imagine that whether the story actually happened or not, Jesus was telling it in order to convey a particular point. forget Luke or the other three that wrote the gospels, they are only conveying what they heard or know from the twelve, to everyone else. thats the idea of the Gospels, "good news" go and spread the good news. its not whether the story is an actual event, its was the moral teaching of that story is and did you get it. dont worry about that kind of crap, "was Jesus talking about a real person" that isnt what the Gospels are about. on a side bar, those parables that "the man" told, some of them are bad a-s-s arent they.

Matt..13:10 And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables?
13:11 He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given.

Because limericks hadn't been invented yet

There once a priest from Galillee
Who found a near corpse near Jericho
Since a Samaritan was there
The priest went on his way merrily!
