I clean my fingernails in the morning, then by early afternoon I have dirt under my fingernails. All I am doing is sitting at my desk. My nails are not long or anything like that that.

What is the cause of this?

could be that you are not paying attention to what you are doing.

exploding ink pens could be the problem. You would be susprised wash and lotion your hands often then apply lotion, use green sticks (from the beauty supply shop) to clean under your nails and keep them cut short (remember to cut them straight across (if not sure get someone to show you the proper way to care for them including toe nails) keep them buffed and the edges filed. you will have attractive hands and nails in no time. :)

Try soaking them in peroxide and water. Scrub with a toothbrush or nail brush. Good handwashing frequently, too.

Particles in the air maybe the problem. But just cut them.

well you can scrub them with peroxide and soap and water or you can soak them in lemon juice and it helps keep the color...
