He gave her a shot of vitamin K, and gave me a prescription for 60mg vitamin per day for one week. He did a blood test at the office, and is sending out more blood for a CBC (I think). My question is, is it necessary to give her the high dose for so long, the blood test in the office came out fine. We should know the results of the 2nd test by late tomorrow, or monday. Is it necessary to get the full prescription, or could we just give her another shot tomorrow. As of right now, she's running around as normal. No unusual behavior at all. She weighs 50 lbs.

Your vet is doing good and you are doing good. Here is the deal believe it or not Rats do not die the first time they nibble on poison they die from coming back and nibbling on and on.Chances are you dog would not have even had a problem, but your vet is being cautious Great!!!A dog CAN DIE from eat ting a dead RAT that has died from rat poison. So if you have dogs and RATS try TRAPS next time you might not be so lucky.I don't know the chemistry behind that but I have had several vets tell me that.Good Luck and try not to panic you are a good mom!!!!

You think anyone on here is going to know more than your vet? If you doubt your vet, call another vet's office and ask them if what he's told you sounds correct.
In any case, high doses of a vitamin, for a short time, are not going to cause any serious problems, so better to be safe than sorry. I'm sure your vet knows what he's talking about.

Follow your vet's advice as given. He has seen the animal, run the necessary tests, and made his recommended diagnosis. If you don't like it, take him to another vet, but don't ask random people on Yahoo their opinion of how to treat your dog who's been poisoned.
Trust your vet. He's the doctor and knows more about animal's medical treatment than anyone that will answer this post.

When did the dog get poisoned? My bf's dog had the same problem and his vet advised to feed him bacon grease as well as the Vitamin K shot. Apparently it coats the stomach and makes it harder for the poison to be absorbed. It sounds like she should be fine though!

I think the vet will do regular blood tests, rat poison is basically blood thinner, warfarin, and vit K thickens the blood again, so I should do exactly what the vet says and he will keep her blood levels checked

If your vet has prescribed it then I would stick to what he says, and ask him about it again when you get the results of the second test. I'm sure that the vitamins won't do her any harm in any case.

That is truly a question for your vet. I would not trust the opinion of a bunch of strangers on a web site on something so life threatening.

the effects of rat poison, are to cause internal bleeding. this is a cumulutive thing, and can progress, even though she appears fine. It is wise to keep up the treatment.
