I've been to 2 Caribbean islands: The Dominican Republic and Curacao. I've also been to the island of Oahu several times.

Based upon my experience HAWAII is way better than the Caribbean (but it can also be more expensive.)

Most Caribbean countries are VERY POOR. You'll probably be staying on a resort, which is immaculate with beautiful beaches. You'll know exact spot where the hotel stops maintaining the grounds because there will be garbage and litter EVERYWHERE. You'll usually not want to go outside the resort at night by yourself because you'll probably get mugged.

In comparing notes to other travelers, this has been the case throughout the Spanish-speaking Caribbean islands, and Jamaica. The Dutch-speaking islands are better (I've been to Curacao, near Aruba.) I cannot comment on the English-speaking islands.

Hawaii is much better. Carribean nations are poorer, and you have to navigate around so many people trying to sell you everything. Beautiful coasts though. Hawaii, has all the comforts of home. I didn't find that it was too costly if you stayed out of the tourist traps. We liked Maui much more than Oahu- way more laid back- even got married there!

The Caribbean is definitely cheaper but Hawaii is a US state so therefore has all the convienences of home. Both have their pro's and con's but I prefer Hawaii simply because it's not a third world country.

I prefer Hawaii. I think the scenery there is beautiful. Plus, the food is great, they have a fantastic nightlife, and you can see all kinds of aquatic life if you snorkel. It's so romantic!
