If you play the game and you spend the money for equiptment then do youself one more little favor.. go to the book store and buy the Ben Hogan book.. the five fundamentals of golf.. I assure you it will be the best 24.99 you will ever spend.. the answer to the question and all the other basics, with illustration, is in the book.. instead of depending on advice from some on this site, you will be much better off depending on the master of the game.. buy the book and follow the instructions.. you will be amazed at how good you can become by knowing what BEN knew..

If you have a good setup and make a stable turn with relaxed arms then you will have made a complete backswing.
If you have made a full backswing the downswing should happen naturally as long as you keep your arms and hands firm but relaxed when you do this the natural whipping action happens about 3/4 of the way down in throughswing. This is the
telltale sign of a good player because whipping action creates lag
which delivers all of your potential power to the ball like a karate chop. Some players hit it vast distance with their irons because of this like Sergio Garcia he is young but has very flexible wrists
that can create extra power in the downswing further increasing the whip that stores power in the throughswing.

Your wrists should remain cocked until the club is basically waist-high on the downswing. That's when you should start rotating your hands, causing you to "release" the club. If released too early, it will cause the clubface to close, resulting in a hook. Too late results in an open clubface, causing a slice.

Releasing the club is important especially when trying to hit the ball a long way. The combination of arm speed and hand speed will greatly improve your overall clubhead speed. Sometimes players will opt not to release the club, called a "dead-arm" shot. That is used to control the distance and reduce the spin on the ball. But that's usually on shorter shots, 150 yards and in.

The wrists will naturally release at the bottom of the swing.

A proper release occurs after the hands past the back leg on the downswing.

Holding off on the release creates a lag that generates enormous amount of power. Releasing too early will sap your downswing of power. (An early release is also known as casting.)

It will take you awhile to find a release that works for you.

Good luck.

yes tiff answered very good. It is basically swinging through the ball,
It's like a follow through. where the wrists and hands swing through the ball and and finish opposite from the beginning of the downswing.

Late is better, if you can manage to make the clubhead catch up. If you get the oportunity, look at Sergio Garcia's swing. He holds the wrist **** for along time and generates a lot of clubhead speed and distance this way.

You should release around waist height, yes, but you also want to make sure that at impact, your wrists, hips, arms and shoulders make a straight line with your golf ball.

Never if you want to retain posession of your clubs. Many people could die if everyone just decided to throw their clubs whenever they wanted to.
