My niece started at two. It depends mainly on the maturity of the child. He/she should be potty trained and able to pay attention and follow directions. It also probably depends on the instructor.

I took a parent-child class with my 2 year old and she loved it. The skating part was easy her, she had no problems getting around on the ice, but the 45 minutes of the class was too long for her to maintain her concentration; at about the 30 minute point she would wander off from the class and do her own thing, which was OK with me there to follow her. She's been approved by the people who teach the class for the more advanced lessons, but I'm holding off on that until she's better able to follow directions and concentrate for longer, so I just take her skating a few times a month and will keep doing so as long as its fun to her, but I doubt I'll do formal lessons again until she's at least 4.

I have done it but was not successful until my child was three years old. At two years old, she didn't quite get the concept and wouldn't put her foot into the skate! At three, she enjoyed the ice skating class tremendously.
So two years old is probably too young, but you can always try and see how your child does!

I worked in a school where there was a slightly handicapped child. Her big sister started doing skating lessons and she wanted to do it also. Her mom signed her up and she did better on skates than she did on bare feet or feet with tennis shoes. She had just turned 3 but mentally a bit younger.

Wait until your child is three to start ice skating. Start with roller blades or roller skates first.

At that age they can barely stand, let alone skate! I put my son in classes at three and regretted it, ended up dropping the class and didn't put him in anything untill he was five. Let them grow up a bit.
