Go to a store and feel the cameras. See which one feels right in your hands. In this case you will be (maybe) happier and make better photos. Both of these cameras are quite capable and will let you shoot photos that can be sent to Nation Geographic. This said, XTi is newer and, as a result, contains updated features and firmware.
XT is more popular simply because it was on the market longer.
And it depends on your budget, of course

Bob's onto something here... The XT has been for sale for about 2 years now and the XTi just came out about 5 months ago. It only make sense that more people have bought the XT.
Not to mention... The XT is close to $200 cheaper than the XTi, so I imagine its sales are still pretty strong.
That doesn't mean it's better. There is not much of a contest between the two for being the better camera. The XTi is the latest and greatest version of Canon's consumer SLR camera with more pixels, a bigger LCD, more autofocus points, blah, blah, blah.

Now give yourself a moment of reflection. The Canon xti is new. The Canon xt has been out for awhile. Now put on your thinking cap and close your eyes and click your heels together. Is it making sense now?

XTi, no question. It has a sensor cleaner and a much improved LCD screen and buffer.
