Yard sales are a great place to find them, as are the local classifieds. The problem with making them is people often use wood because it is practical and they can CHEW the wood, and wood absorbs urine.
The price for new depends on the size. Wal-Mart carries some that are not too expensive at all.
Keep in mind ath if you buy a used crate from some distance away....the shipping will kill you!!!! That can cost more than getting a new crate.

Crate training is the best thing you will ever do for your puppies, once you get through the initial stage (good luck) I don't have any plans for a crate but just wanted to make a point that by the time you buy the materials to make two dog crates and then the time and labor spent building them, you probably would be better off just buying one. You can buy a crate for under $30 if you look for awhile. Make sure you get one that will be large enough for your dog when they are full grown so that you only have to buy them one in their lifespan. I know they aren't cheap, but it's something you only have to buy once. You will spend way more money on dog food by the time they are adults than you will on a crate.

I don't know where you live but there is a very useful site my wife and I use. It's called FreeCycle. People post things they don't have any use for and just want to give away. You can also post wanted ads. You can try that and see if anyone in your area has a crate they would like to give away. The site is free and I think the only thing required is an email. The site is www.freecycle.org.

I don't think you can make one which will be safe to use for a dog who isn't trained not to destroy a crate. The plastic molded ones are best because they have no edges that puppies can get hold of with their teeth, and are easily cleaned. Look in the local classifieds, at garage sales, or maybe use a playpen for now.

Try Craigslist.org -- it is the greatest -- and free site. Looking in my area I see a "Dog crate with divider and cushion. Excellent condition. $50.00 -- 41 x 30 x 26--Divider is use to adjust the length as the dog grows. --Crate folds for storage."
THIS IS NOT ME so it's not SPAM! Craigslist is pretty cool though!

Try going to your local Salvation Army or such on a regular basis. You will find them there all the time.
A crate is worth every penny in what it saves in bad puppy behavior. Wood can be chewed up with those puppy teeth.

Sorry unless you make the dog a box, which I feel is cruel then, No. If you cannot afford the necessities this dog needs then you should not have a dog.
