I have a 4 year old niece who is just like any other child this age. Whenever my sister tells her to do something, and she either doesn't listen or understand her the first time, she will sometimes refer to my niece as "goofy". She will say something like "That's what I just told you to do, goofy girl." Do you think this could psychologically affect my niece as she grows up?

Maybe that is a pet name that her parents call her. Kids at age 4 act goofy as heck. I wouldn't worry about it.

I call my 3 year old goofy all of the time. Actually he has started saying "what, are you goofy or something?" I would rather hear goofy than some of the other words out of kids' mouths these days.

As for it being name calling, I use it as a term of endearment. He is my goofy little boy and always will be.

I don't think she's using goofy as a bad term. In my own opinion it's not a bad word, it's just a funny term. I would think potential harm would be calling her a dumb-butt or stupid but not goofy. The actual definition of “goofy” is “silly.” Which I use with my children all the time. Example; “Look at that silly bear.”

No, but tone of voice would be more of a factor here than the actual name "goofy". If she is calling her that all in good fun then it is fine. If she is yelling then it is not. Ask the 4 year old what she thinks about it and you will have the best answer there.

She should be fine. I tell my 7 year old she is being "goofy" all the time. She gets mad and tells me she is not goofy so I call her silly now.

If she grows up to be the type of person that lets everything bother her, it won't matter what your sister said, she will find something to complain about, but if she grows up to be the type person who chooses to be happy and content in life, this is going to be no big deal. I call my kids silly sometimes, and I think that is about equal. No biggie in my opinion.

Not at all! I call my daughter that all the time. She probably interprets it as a pet name, just as my 4 year old daughter does! Calm down a little...

no, that couldnt affect her. It is meant to be a silly, fun term. If she starts calling her stupid or anything like that, then yes, that is verbal abuse

I don't think that's bad and I don't think it will affect her in the long run. Everyone calls their kids something.
