I'm looking forward to Boeing's 747-8 becoming a reality...what is happening with this planned jetliner? Is Boeing going forward with the project?

Yes, Boeing is going forward with both versions of 747-8 (passenger and freight). Lufthansa ordered 20 of the passenger version in recent weeks. They are the launch customer for the passenger version. Cargolux is the launch customer for the freighter variant.

Here are some of the major airlines orders for the 747-8:

20 pax version for Lufthansa
5 freighters for Korean
10 freighters for Emirates
12 freighters for Atlas Air
8 freighters for Nippon Cargo Airlines
10 freighters for Cargolux

British Airways is considering ordering about 45 of the 747-8. The Boeing is going to come in the market in 2009 with this plane boeing is trying to beat airbus and boeing is coming up with the boeing 787 which is better then the 767 and 777 and Airbus is coming up with the airbus a350. Beoing lasts longer then Airbus.
