a friend who is a belly dancing instructor told me that she can achieve orgasm jsut by stimulation to the belly / navel area. does this seem likely to any of you, i dont get it. any explanation?

Whatever we put in there as a sexual turn on, becomes a sexual turn on.
That's why we have 'fetishes', to classify what different folks find arousing, from toes to ears and everywhere in between. We're cool that way.

Orgasm is though a physical reaction, it's greatly a mental thing. It isn't totally uncommon to see people with specific areas that arouse them more than the others.
In her case, being a belly dancer, much of her focus is around the belly-button area. So, to her, someone that admires and plays with that area is directly addressing her craving or desire. That's what i believe makes her experience those orgasms.
For you, it could be somewhere else ~ somewhere more traditional, if you know what I mean. As a man, it's in me to find out and appreciate those sensual, erotic parts of you that you orgasmically connect with :-)
