I was thinking abut getting a Labrador but I have a Chihuahua and a cat. I know Labs are timid dogs. But will my Chihuahua take this okay. She is still young and gets along with some dogs. I just don't want to stress her out. I have introduced her to a black lab but she constantly barked at it. But that lab was grown not a puppy. What do you think?

Oh trust me KitKat we live on a 67 acre ranch in the mddle of no where. The lab will have plenty of room to run and numerous creeks to play a pond to swim in and squirrels to bark at.

Labs are timid when they get to be adults, at least some of them are. But as puppies they are very high energy. With you having that much land, a Lab is perfect for you!! Labs are also very smart and even as puppies, they learn quickly what is tolerated and what isn't. If they can be gentle with cats, they can be gentle with your chihuahua. Your chi was probably barking out of fear of the adult Lab, that is such a drastic size difference and she was probably scared. Allowing the puppy to grow up with the chi would be a lot better because while the puppy is still small enough, the chi could establish "ranking" among them. I have 2 Lab puppies and 2 cats and neither have hurt either of my cats and after only a week, both puppies knew what the cats would tolerate and what they wouldn't. The cats set the rules from day one and everything has been great. Good luck!

Oh, get a LAB!!! they are SO astounding, and also you may under no circumstances locate a more suitable unswerving or more suitable constructive pal. I['m truly no longer James, i'm a 60 year old Gramma. i have had some labs in my existence. I had females. i do not recognize if the sex of the dogs makes a distinction. I now have a 2 year old widely used poodle woman and picture she's astounding, yet favor i'd gotten a lab. it may well be the sex. A firstclass widely used poodle breeder in California wrote to me that the male poodles bond with females, and the female poodles bond with men. I had requested her if it grow to be my mind's eye, or did this dogs concepts my 3 year old grandson more suitable constructive than me. She gave the above answer, and extra that the dogs would always attempt to drag the "alpha" personality on me because i grow to be woman. The dogs is large. She grow to be housebroken in about 3 days, and had the run of the abode when we were abode interior of three weeks. At evening i'd 'gate' her in the kitchen. even as my youngest grandson began crawling, he would bypass to her, and he or she would stretch out her arm and actually puppy him on the top. examine with a breeder and observe if labs of a particular sex will pull the alpha personality on you. i imagine it truly is many times a 'widely used poodle element' because poodles, by using nature, are form of uppity. Labs are not as aggressive as Dobermans, yet they are oftentimes. yet a lab will keep your existence more suitable than once, and also you've it 14-18 years.

I have a 11 mth coc lab, all she wants to do is play, the thing i would watch out for my lab doesnt realize she is bigger than the smaller dogs, she wants to play with our neighbors yourkie, and when they do we have to watch very very closly because she will (the lab) pounce on the other smaller dog, not realizing how big she is compared .. she is almost 70 lbs, and the yorkie is not more than 7lbs!! So my advice is is they would probaly get along espically if they are in the same age group, but watch out, puppy labs arent always timid, they can be very highly active so I would watch out for the little one!!

Labs are GREAT DOGS! They love everyone. Timid---I haven't seen that yet. We had a disabled dog and then got the lab and he was so gentle with our older dog. They do get excited to see you and tend to jump up on you. Start training YOUNG! We are struggling with going on walks with a leash---he just is so strong and wanting to go that we will have to work hard at getting him to walk with us not drag us. Our daughter got an Akita puppy and brought over to show our lab,. Then did great together.

Depends on the age of the Chihuahua. If she is younger (2 or 3 yrs) she will adapt okay eventually. If she is older, you will need to slowly introduce a new dog before you commit to owning the new lab.

They should be OK. I started with a Jack Russell and then got the Lab. The Jack Russell is the boss now, even with the Lab weighing 85 pounds. Just get ready for the Lab to be dragging neighbors doormats, shoes, and whatever else he can find in the neighborhood over into your yard. That is, if you are going to allow him to roam.

i do not suggest it as the chi is really too small to be with a puppy especially one that is so big. puppies are very clumsy and do not understand their strength and size. also, labs are very high energy when they are young. this will stress out your chi and your cat and create added pressure for you. if you really want a lab or another dog that will get along wth your's, i suggest two things: get a male dog. two bitches together is very difficult. it is much better to get one male and one female. this is from experience fostering losts of dogs. the other is seek a dog that is a little older and from a rescue. this way, you already know their personality and you can see if your chi warms up you him. i suggest you go on petfinder.com to see if there is a dog that interests you.

Take your Chihuahua with you when choosing a new dog. Let it pick out its new friend. A puppy would work best in this situation as it would be less intimidating.
