If you have the time and patience, this is a job for yourself. It's so easy. Get one of the electric sanders and sand away. Wear a mask for this. It's dusty. Use a heavy duty paper also. You can tell the difference just by touching them. Get the ones that actually look like they almost have little stones on it for the first part. Then after that paper, you will want to use a smoother one. By doing this after the heavy paper, you get rid of little lines and marks that show up. You can't see them too well, but when you varnish, they stick out like a sore thumb. (I worked at a cabinet factory....that's how I know that) Then you will want to stain the color you want. It is best to use two coats. Then, just varnish. Apply a few coats of this if you have the time and money. The more varnish, the sturdier the protection is. (Amish do this) Then all they have to use to clean their floors is PLAIN water and they are so shiney you wouldn't believe it! And you can feel very proud of yourself when the job is done and tell everybody you did it yourself. Good luck.

I think that we were quoted $3 to $5/square foot out here in California. I just saw a basic quote for $1.50/square foot on Craigslist. Here look at a CT Craigslist posting:
