Could be kennel cough. They dont need to have been in kennels to catch it. Mine got it couple years ago. It can be serious in puppies and older dogs if untreated. My vet told be to give them Benelin cough medicine and to keep an eye on the older one and if he had any mucas from eyes and nose to take him back for anti biotics. It is curable if you get him to the vet for medication. I am sure your parents will pay. Noone should have a pet unless they are prepared for such expenses. Why is he not insured. That will cover the cost

You should see a vet. It could be any number of things. Dogs don't cough because they're old. They might get slower, more feeble, more clumsy, etc... but they don't get symptoms of illnesses from age alone. She does have a greater chance of dying if she doesn't see a vet though.

I had a pomeranian who did that gagging, choking. It's called a collapsed trachia. I'm not saying that's what your dog has, it could be more serious and you probably should take her to the vet. If it is a collapsed trachia it's usually ok unless they seem to have trouble breathing or eating. But you should definetely take her to the vet to make sure

I have a 12 year old lab who started this and my vet said it was laryngeal paralysis! Which means a little nerve does not close when he eats/drinks. It will worsen if you are in a humid climate. But definitely have it checked out by a vet - no meds for this condition.

I took my 13yr old cocker spaniel to the vets with the same symtoms, thinking it could be kennel cough. It was infact an enlarged heart. Get her checked out.

She's gotta go to the vet. She's too old to let whatever is causing the cough run it's course.

I think her problem is that the owner wont take her to the vet like a good pet owner should.
