Your laptop was probably shipped with CDs. You should use these CDs to re-install your computer. It won't work to install word seperately on your freshly made install now anymore, so I'm afraid you'll have to reinstall your system again... Yeah I know, damn laptop manufacturers...

If you don't seem to find the cds anymore, or if you've never got them, maybe the backup software is on a hidden part of your hard drive. Computer manufacters often use this method to save money on CDs/DVDs (I know, how much can a CD/DVD cost lol, but they do )
In that case, when your computer starts, you should see something like "Press F12 to restore your system" or something like that. Follow the instructions on the screen and your computer will be reinstalled in notime, word included.

If none of the above help you out, you can still download the free word reader. You can find it via Yahoo search or something. The downside is that this prog will only let you read word files, you won't be able to edit them.

You could download an alternitive Office Suite, like OpenOffice. You can find it at http://www.openoffice.org It's not made by microsoft, it's made by Sun, but it's very good software.
If you really want the office suite made by microsoft, you'll have to go to the store and buy it...

If you can retrieve the product code for your word, but not the cd, you can still download it from programs like limewire... if you're lucky.
Varying from where you live, this might be illegal...

good luck...

When you format a disk, you are erasing everything in the disk ,yes everything and you'll loose all your data and programs.

So after installing a new version of OS you need to manually install whatever software you want. As for as Word goes, if you have bought the software and have the CD you can install a fresh copy of it. If not as your friend to suggest a better way.

You can download trial versions of Microsoft Office from Microsoft website but they will expire after a preset time. If you use Microsoft Word a lot it's a good idea to get a fresh install.

Unless you have the disk, your in trouble. Microsoft will not give you a new disk. Unless perhaps you still have the licsense key.

Get your office disk and reinstall office. If you cant find the disk and you have the key, then try calling office and see if they will give you another one.
