It doesn't take years of combat experience. You can be selected right out of boot camp sometime. But THEY chose YOU. All you can do is enlist, give 110% all the time and hope it is enough.

Do your research first and understand what the specific mission is for each element (Army: SF, USMC: Force-Recon, Navy: SEALS or Air Force: Para-Rescue. You can start by talking to all the recruiters and get their insight. As for the Army and the Marine Corps, I know from experience that you need atleast a good 4 years to demonstrate your proficiecy as an infantryman. Afterwards you can seek a screening for qualification. As for the Navy you can get screened immedietly after basic training for BUDS. However, do understand that if you wash out you could end scraping paint and mopping decks on Naval vessels for the remainder of your enlistment. So make sure you choose a "field" that has a marketable skill as a back-up. And for the Air-Force, see the recruiter for details. Now as for your motivations to join the military, I'll give you some advice from personal experience. Just because you think you have the "smarts" and "physical ability" doesn't necesarrily mean you'll make the cut. Afterall, everybody that comes out to screen thinks that they got what it takes. When in reality, the favorable attributes are maturity, high sense of dicsipline and exceptional will and intestinal fortitude. That is what will get you through. Also, keep in mind where this experience will take you after your military career, whether it be 4 years or 20+. It's a great experience when your young, but not many employers are seeking the skill sets that you've acquired...unless you wish to join law enforcement afterwards. If you are adamant about joining the military, then atleast analyze your military occupational choices in relation to the long term. I realized that after my time all I had was the same ol' stories that get old after awhile (and believe me everyone has one whether there true or not...bottom line, who really cares?). Good luck.

If you are trying to go into "Special Operations" then try working with an Army Recruiter. The Army is the only branch of the military that offers a Special Forces Enlistment Option aka 18X. Every other branch requires that you meet certain criteria before applying to initate the process. Special Operations is an Army ran show and the schooling for special skills and identifiers are largely ran by the Army ie HALO, Airborne, Air Assualt, Path Finder, etc... Also take into consideration that the Navy and the Air Force are currently downsizing and the Army is getting a huge increase in numbers and GUARNTEES everything in WRITING.

you can always go for Pararescue, in the AF. Its a volonteer position in the AF, they ask if anyone wants to try for it while in basic, if they say yes you go for a day or 2 for physical test to see if you can make it physically. If so they are usually accepted. The wash out rate is pretty high so if you fail you get preference on what you want to retrain into.

If you dont know what Pararescue guys are watch the movie Perfect Storm thats them guys.

It's a noble goal. And not easily attained. The only SF guys I have deal with are the SEAL's and Green Berets. They are crazy. But I guess you have to be to be in those types of units. It's all in your head. If you have it in your mind that you're going to make it you will. I just hope you aren't afraid of water and heights. Anyway, since I am partial to the SEAL's go to navyseals.com. Good luck!!
