There is such a HUGE range when it comes to speech development in children... but here's a link that should be helpful and at least give you a rough guideline for *normal*: http://www.childdevelopmentinfo.com/development/language_development.shtml
Boys tend to develop expressive speech later and more slowly than girls. Girls tend to link words together sooner and become little Chatty Cathy dolls by about age 2 - lol
To be on the safe side, I'd give him two months (until his 2nd birthday) and if his vocabulary hasn't picked up quite a bit in size and he's not linking anything together (like "go car" or "me dink" or "me up") then I'd request a speech and language evaluation through either Early Intervention or ChildFind through your local school system. At least then you'd know if there's a problem or if you're just feeling nervous about his expressive speech but he's really within normal limits.
Kids do tend to progress in bursts... but if his burst doesn't happen or you have any other concerns about his behavior or development, it's best to get in there early with some assistance to get him up to speed before school age.
Best to you...

Its ok for a baby not to talk at all untill he reaches 18 months however he had to understand all what you are telling him,so 75 words on the age of 22 months is pretty ok,just work on improving his vocabulary,Good Luck

You have absolutely nothing to worry about. My son's sentences did not make sense until he was almost 4. Now I can't even remember that he was ever slow to develop his language skills. Boys are slower, if he is the first born that makes it even slower but believe me, by the time he is 3, you will wish you did not worry this much...Children are never the same, they develop at their own pace. Just relax and pay attention, so that you can encourage other people in the future

I used books with my daughter. I would use my finger to follow as I read. Use really easy books with like one sentence on each page. It took a littl while, but she caught on. Also when he says the words try linking them for him. Kids like to copy anyone, so if you do it he will too. The other thing is if he says something like tormato instead of tomato just say it right don't correct him. Kids addapt fast, but if you are still worried about it, find an early education program and have him assessed. I am sure that if you try these things he will catch on, like I said kids like to copy anything and anyone. Good luck and hope everything workds out.

First, make sure youre not speaking to him in baby talk. Although the tone of baby talk keeps their attention, hearing regular language teaches them to speak much more quickly.
Second, get his hearing checked. Sometimes children with speech delay simply cant hear all the words being spoken around them.
Third, give him time. Children are different and as long as he is responding he is probably ok.

He will in time but for now he is happy with letting you know his needs with single words--he gets his needs met so why worry--that is what he is thinking--I can see him becoming a man with few words such as my 16 year old--and that OK ---as long as both you and he are communicating don't sweat it--Oh and remember when he needs gas money --he will link words then ---- :-)

Don't listen to other people. My kid is super intelligent. He just started really talking(more than one word at a time) about 2 months ago. He is 2 1/2. Don't worry. I am sure he is fine. If I listenend to everything people said I would be in a heap of trouble.

does he say 'a ball' or 'a truck'. sometimes adults forget that a can be a word.
my daughter is 19 months old and only links a couple of words together.......'read a book' and 'pretty please' she has a little buddy that says 'a ball' and 'hi mama', 'hi dada', and 'a clock'
it takes time but if you hand him a ball and say 'a ball' he'll eventually pick up on it. Keep some of your phrases short and simple and just talk to him nomrally during the rest of the day. He'll do fine.

No I think it's nothing to worry about. He'll talk in sentences when he's ready. Boys (not to sound sexist) Usually talk slower then girls. Nothing to worry about. My grandfather made a very good point whenI was wondering the same thing about weening off the bottles
"Have you ever seen a First Grader sucking a bottle" and it was true
So I think a lot of times parents worry before they should...just give it time

He'll be fine. Just be patient. I have a cousin who is about the same age and he can't even say 75 words. But i don't think it is anything serious. Some kids just develope a little faster.
