I did contribute a nice selection of mini pastries, which is the only thing that looks appetizing!

How do you decline what, attending? Just don't show up.

At least you were polite enough to bring something, and not just disparaging the cooking of every other person in the office.

At some point you might also learn that you should attend such an event for camaraderie, even if you only sample 1/4 tsp of each person's offering. They are proud of what they brought, and probably don't care to be sneered at by you.

If it were me id put some things on a plate, make a comment about everything looking soooo appetizing, then id go to my cubicle, cover the plate of unappealing food with a large napkin, start emailing, looking busy, then when someone comes by and ask if i enjoyed the food, id say "Im so swamped, I havent had chance to try anything". Then id rub my head, exhale, and do the charlie brown "arrrghhhh". After my coworker left, id dump that plate of crap in the trash, save the plate, take the trashbag out of the trashcan, go to the bathroom and dump it in the bathroom trashcan...then id go back to my cubicle, place another napkin on top of the plate, put another trashbag in the trashcan, ball up some paper and put it in there, and wait for another coworker to come by so i can say "That was one helluva pot luck! I need a drink, want a soda, im buying"....Thats what id do.

Excellent that you contributed pastries. I agree with the answer of making up a tiny plate and covering with a napkin to throw out. The purpose of gatherings is for the people to socialize. Food is the bonus (or in this case... not so much). Just smile and visit with people.
Good luck!

I agree with the posters who say tell themn you are allergic. That can backfire and maybe they want you to ellaborate. Sometimes a good thing is to say you are "lactose intolerant" because that is something you can cover up in the future. Also similar ones would be heartburn, acid reflux, a case of indigestion.. etc. Or the mysterious "I am not feeling too well today" while clenching your stomach and making the "don't ask me about it" face.

Bringing a selection of your own is a good tactful way to make sure you have something to eat. You can put samples of other things on your plate and toss it later. If you DO find something you like, find out who made it and thank them for such a delicious dish. They'll bring it again next time and give you two choices.

I would assume that this lunch is durring a weekday in the office, which you would be present for anyhow?

Do nothing. If anyone asks why your not eating:
1. Say that your not feeling well at the moment, maybe ask if they have any Tums?

2. Say that you had a were really hungry that monring and had a BIG breakfast, so your not so much durring the lunch hour.

3. Hide in your office. :)

Well find anything that looks slightly appetizing (crackers, pretzels, whatever) and eat some of it. Hey it's not like your hurting their feelings. Unless somebody really wants you to try something they made. Or don't eat anything. Just talk to someone who's not eating and no one will notice. Or you could just eat something and just try to deal with it. Good luck!

Why not take something to the potluck with you and then just eat that. That way, you will like it, other pple will like it and no one will be offended. Yippie. Take like a pasta dish and some salad and just eat your own food.
