I would like to know because my boyfriend is in the reserves and he goes to basic and AIT this summer/fall. He says there is little chance of being deployed but I heard that the reserves actually get deployed more often. Can somebody help clarify? Thanks...and if you were in the reserves, what was your experience?

The odds are he will be deployed. How soon it happens will depend on his MOS.
There used to be a 24-month active duty time limit for Guard and Reserve personnel. That has just been changed. Now their total active duty time is unlimited, instead of 24 months total of all deployments. And they can serve up to 24 months in a single deployment.
Units that were not deployable because they had hit that 24-month time limit are again deployable now.

I've been deployed twice in 4 years. Of course, it only took 18 years before I FINALLY got to deploy.
Chances are, especially in the Reserves, he's going to deploy. I don't know of any MOS or any job in the Army that wouldn't deploy.
It's not that bad, though. The experience is good.

Whoever told him that there is little chance of being deployed didn't know what they are talking about. in this day and age of the so-called War on Terror, are troops are spread very, thin. He'll most likely get deployed. He'll most likely be gone for about 18 months, including workups. And now they've eliminated the time limit for deployment for reserves, so he can deploy more than once.

well the president said they need more troops in Iraq, and i know for a fact my unit is getting deployed soon, I'm in the Marine reserves, they have been deployed before too. So i would assume that if his MOS is a combat or medical he is likely to get deployed, or if his unit has not been deployed then it will be likely to happen. sorry for that.

Well, with the upcoming 'surge' in Iraq, he may indeed face action if the situation continues to deteriorate. Half of the lads out their are on extended duty as it is, someones got to fill their places when they leave

With dubya calling the shots, I'd say his chances of being called up are 100%.

Reservists are soldiers just like the rest. If they are needed, they're going. Bush just called up another 21K soldiers. Where do you think they'll come from?
