Nope, not at all. Crate training works the best, for dogs of ANY age. Just make sure the crate is big enough for the dog to stand up, turn around, and lay down in, but not large enough to poop in one end then sit somewhere else. Make sure you take them outside several times a day. Keep to a schedule and praise them like mad when thyey go out. Give them a yummy treat and they'll soon learn they can "trade" their poops and pees for a snack.
Crate training is by far the best and quickest way to train a pet. Best of luck!

He's almost a full grown dog, not a puppy! What happened that you were unable to house break him. You need to get advise from a professional dog trainer. Something has gone wrong in your house breaking training. Crateing at this age would only confuse the dog. Try to start all over by taking him/her out at least every 2 hours. Especially when the dog wakes up and after play and eating and especially before bed time. If you leave the dog for long periods of time, it's no wonder he/she goes in the house. Dogs like a lot of praise when they do the right thing, so don't forget to praise for doing the business. You also may want to talk to your vet, just in case there is a medical reason the dog is going in the house. Good luck.

It is never too late to crate train! it might be a bit tougher, but all you need to do is start out gradual. let him get used to the crate. leave the door open, put a yummy treat in there. work up to closing the door for 10 minutes while you are there, then 10 minutes while you are gone etc. 10 months isn't very old, should be no problem! just remember, you need to ignore any crying. it might get worse before it gets better, but eventually the pup will learn that crying gets him nowhere and a crate isn't so bad.

I don't think it's too late, but you don't have to crate train your puppy to get him/her potty trained. I have a now six-month old puppy who was completely housebroken at 4 mos. by rewarding her with treats EVERY time she went outside for two weeks, then every other time, etc., until now when verbal praise is sufficient. We have another dog in the house (not ours) who is not potty-trained, and she has not picked up his bad habits, either.
When I had to leave my puppy at home, I shut her in the bathroom with her bed, food and water, and a litterbox I had filled with leaves, grass, dirt, etc. I purchased a potty training aid spray (it leaves a scent that the animal will recognize and know to do their business there), and sprayed it on the litterbox contents, and the area in which we walked her. Worked in NO TIME.
Like I said, she's only 6 mos. old now, but everyone that has met her is beyond impressed that she is housebroken without crate training. GOOD LUCK!

Everyone says you can't train an old or older dog new tricks. This is false. You can train any dog at any age you just need to have patience and persistance. Start training your puppy, but stick with it and be regular. It will be hard at first because your puppy won't like it but it will get used to it.
Good luck.

No, because of your dogs age it may be easier. A ten month old should be able to hold its bladder for five to seven hours. A dog will not use the bathroom where he lives. The crate is his home so he does not want to dirty it up.

No. It's not too late. Just remember that crates are small and scary. It'll take some extra time.
