No, it's not normal. How old is she? Females who are bred too young are very often terrible mothers. How old are the puppies? Did you count placentas to make sure she didn't retain one? Is she acting like she's in distress at all? Try spending time with the pups so she'll feed them - and if she doesn't get the hang of it you'll have to go to the vet to get formula for them as well as vet's advice on how to look after them.

My chihuahua did the same thing. It was because she was my baby and was used to being with me all the time. I had to hold her and let each puppy nurse off her. I did this for a while and each time I would pet her and tell her she was a good girl. After a few times she began nursing on her own. I then found that I had to shut her in a bathroom at night with the puppies because she was trying to get into bed with me (she normally slept with me) and was trying to drag her puppies in bed with us too (not safe). It all worked out in the end. You need to make sure the puppies are getting fed so start by holding her on a pillow on your lap and one by one put a puppy on her to feed. She's new at being a mom and is probably confused. Mine had a C-section which I think made her more confused, did yours have them naturally or did she have a c-section? Sometimes you will find a female that just won't take care of their pups in which case you will have to call your vet and find what you will need to do. They sell puppy formula at the pet shops but seriously try to get her to feed them herself because it will be better for the pups and easier on you in the long run. She sounds like she's just confused.

for a first time mother this is not uncommon sit next to her on the floor and pet her and help the pups latch on , while they are nursing keep petting her and telling her what a good girl she is. Make sure to feed her plenty of food, nursing takes a lot of calories!!! You might even want to put her back on puppy food because it is higher in calories.

Our little schitzu was the same way. After she had her pups we had a time with her.The vet said some dogs are so high strung and especially if they are spoiled(mine is)that they don't know how to cope with the pups and are basically scared of them. Try putting her in with them and staying by her while they nurse. If all else fails you may have to feed them with a bottle--vets have them & the formula.Good luck,

Call the vet and put her in a crate so she will see that the pups will nurse. You can then walk away and let her know that it is up to her.Good luck with those precious puppies.....
