...and I'm almost broke, too. Hence, I want to do something special, yet cheap on my birthday.

Congratulations, Happy Birthday and Best Wishes for a Fun, and Prosperous Coming Year.
Is it possible for you to go home for your birthday, Birthdays, with mom and dad and sibling are always fun and it won't cost you a thing.
If not, make your own pizza, they sell pizza dough already made at most grocery stores or bakery, make some popcorn, make a big pitcher of iced tea and spurge on a nice chocolate cake. Call of couple of your best friends for night watching Movies and just enjoy the evening. Today you have not so much, but still be happy, you are alive and healthy. We have all gone through such times. Who knows what tomorrow will bring you, my wish for you, all the desires of your heart, better things and more festive celebrations for your coming birthdays.

Good question. Well, anything nice would be fine. I can tell how excited you are which is great =) just don't go overboard with plans/money/ideas etc...Ask friends for their opinons and see what they say; or ask to see if they want to help plan etc..
