How does the Oyster card work? Can you use occasionally on tubes and buses?

Basically you buy the card which costs £3 and is refundable. You then top up however much you want to to use on a pay as you go basis, or you can also add weekly/daily/monthly/yearly tickets to it. Fares are a lot cheaper than paying in cash for tickets eg. it's £4 a single in zone 1, and only £1.50 on the Oyster Card. Bus fares are £1 on Oyster, or £2 with cash.

When you go through the barriers you swipe your card, allowing you to go through, it then deducts the amount from your balance.

Oyster cards work exactly the same as topping up a pay as you go phone. You put money on the card and then touch the Oyster readers at the beginning and end of your journey with your topped up card. At a tube station, for example, the Oyster card reader is the yellow pad above the slot where you put a normal ticket. You can use Oyster at any time on Tubes, buses and the Docklands Light Railway. Plans are in discussion to extend Oyster use to overground trains that stop or terminate at London stations.

oyster is like pay-as-you-go for public transport. you get a card and put credit on it, then use it on tube, buses, rail in zones 1-6, plus tramlink and DLR. it automatically works out the cheapest fare and is much cheaper than paying cash, especially on busses.
