Part of it is obedience. Part of it is selflessness. All too often, "stuff" becomes more important to people than God. Giving money to the Lord's work is one way to inhibit that desire.
The ability to create wealth comes from God in the first place. Giving back to His work should not be a burden. It's all in the attitude.
And, as others have said, it goes to pay salaries of those on the ministry, along with the bills of the church.
As it is written: "You know that those who work in the temple get their food from the temple and that those who serve at the altar get their share of its offerings, don't you? In the same way, the Lord has ordered that those who proclaim the gospel should make their living from the gospel." (I Corinthians 9:13-14)

God does not need or want your money. The tithe money goes into the pockets of the church officials. With it, they buy whatever they desire. Take a look at some of the homes that the Top evangelists live in...the cars they drive...the leer jets they use. That is where your tithes are going. They're selling salvation...Pray and Pay.
If you want to tithe 10% or more...use that money to help another person who really needs the help. Feed a homeless person, for example. The Lord would rather see your money used to help another person....show love and a light.

He dosn't need either. In fact, in His Word, it tells us to TEST HIM in the giving of tithes and offerings. Tithing is not a NT requirement, it is an opportunity. A way to prove that God does indeed exist, and to show that He refuses to be out-given. Give with a joyful heart, and see what happens!

A church is a building. A church is also members that come together and worship in fellowship with shelter/heat/water being a privilege. The church is also considered a huge part of community fellowship. Some churches gather together...maybe three or more at one church during Easter and choose to cook a fellowship breakfast. Youth programs that go beyond Sunday school to trips out of state and other youth-based outings.
A church also funds missionaries in countries that are struggling including funding missionary work within the states. Those missionaries build churches whose members also eventually able to have shelter/heat/water as a privilege to them as they worship. Missionaries that are supported by the church can also be those that help the less fortunate running on zero funding from the government with complete success.
The shut-ins and those close to death are visited and cared for on a regular basis. Funerals for members and the dinners following in some churches have gone without respectable financial gift from family for what ever reason. Who do you think pays for all of this?

God would not favor money. Tithing given to the church to help with missions, homeless, conserving the church operating and in spite of else they favor. We tithe not because God needs the money, however that's carried out to educate that all of us understand the position our money comes from and to educate our obedience because we are informed to do it.

Tithes are not for God but to support religious institutions and/or the poor.
Did you know that, biblically speaking, even the recipients of the tithes have to tithe what they receive? The purpose is to train us to become givers and not takers. An open hand can accomplish far more than a closed fist.

God does not "need" our money. It is all His to begin with, after all. Actually if you think about it, He only asks for 10% be given back to Him and He lets us keep the other 90% free and clear. : ) Tithing and offering is not only a command, but an act of worship. It is not an issue of Heaven or Hell, but something that is used to bless others and ultimately ourselves. Giving changes a person's attitude and keeps us from being consumed by our own selfishness. God knows that giving back to Him is also good for US. : ) Hope that helps.

G_d just wants you to live right, treat your brothers and sisters with love, and don't let His name fall to the ground. Oh, and yes, the churches need some money to keep the church buildings up, bills paid, families hungerless, to charity, secretaries's income going, and etc.
