I had a partial plate made, and it had a huge gap at the top. My prothodontist wouldn't fix or replace it, so yesterday in desperation I burned off the tooth with a lighter, and replaced it with a larger tooth I had (from a professional denture-making kit from the 1970s), attaching it to the mouth-plate with denture repair epoxy from the drugstore. It works and looks good, amazingly! But I wonder if the acrylic, or whatever the plate is made of, could have become toxic when I melted it to get the old tooth off. It had a melty kind of smell, which is now, 15 hours later, very faint, but perceptible. Anyone know where I might turn for the answer to this?

Omigawd! Go see another dentist who will fix it. See a Doctor. DOn't try to fix it yourself. Seek professional help!

You're not the first to try that so don't feel so special! But seriously, go to your dentist and let him check your bite and adjust and polish the rough spots. He probably won't even charge you for that. I doubt there is anything toxic from the material with the removal of the tooth or the epoxy you used. When we remove them we drill them out which creates heat and really smells too. The kit from the 70's is probably ok unless the teeth are meant for display or shading only. My concern is the longevity of the prosthetic with the epoxy used. I would ask your dentist just to be safe and to ease your mind. Good luck!

I don't believe it can become toxic just by melting it, but I would encourage you to find a new Dentist who is willing to provide care for you. The dentist I worked with for over 5 years would rather have adjusted an appliance for someone everyday than have them adjust it themselves at home.
