I am not sure, but my 4 year old does this still! I think you have to actually show them to close their lips and make a smooch with your lips and then have them do it and practice.

This question is funny because I have been wondering the same thing. Then last night my 16 month old finally closed his mouth. I was so happy because usually he will bite your lip when you think you are getting a sweet little kiss.

This may be universal among all babies , they use their mouths as a means of discovery and it becomes a habit for awhile till they grow older . Their sloppy little kisses are so sweet and innocent that's one of the many things which make them so irresistible.

think about what the child actually sees. a person instinctively closes their eyes when being kissed. so your son doesn't really see the pucker, what is more obvious, therefore memorable, is the big open mouth and smile you have when pulling away. its ok, kiss the boy lots anyway!!!!!!!!!!!

Because they haven't learned to pucker yet. They see you do it when you kiss them and they try, but they don't have it down yet .It's the same as learning to walk and play with blocks. They are still developing their motor skills. It's soooo cute though! :)
