When your puppy gets the first one, they need another one exactly one year later. After this time, it is done every 2-3 years, depending on your vet, or the requirements of the area you live in (it's 3 yrs where I live).

All shots are the same dosage with rabies. However, the cycle works like this:

First rabies shot- good for one year
Second rabies shot- good for three years
Third shot, if given before the three years expires: good for three years
Third shot, if given after the three years expires:good for one year

And so on.

Giving a rabies shot every year isnt a good idea, unless for some reason your vet is using an old formula and its only got a metabolic life of a year in the dogs system. But thats unusual.

Shots like this have bases made of mercury and other heavy metals, which can build up in the dog and cause issues over time. Especially the distemper shots that vets try to give every year.

It depends which vaccination your vet uses. They have recently come out with a 3 year rabies vaccination that is required once every 3 years, as well as a 1 year vaccination that's every year.

Everytime you get a raibies vaccination your vet hands you a rabies certificate. On the certificate it states when the shot was given, the experation date of the shot, as well as other information about your dog.

You should check the rabies certificate to see when the next rabies shot is due, if you lost the certificate you can call your vet and talk to them and they'll tell you your next due date.

My dog got her rabies shot, but the shot is only good for a year (because of where she went). I plan to get her on the 3 year vaccination next year.

If you do not know if your dog has the rabies shot or not, then the best thing to do is to call and talk to your vet. They will help you go through the necessary procedures to determine if your dog has the vaccination or not.

The 1 year or 3 year vaccination is not based on location, but basd on the vet and which one they carry. My vet carries both vaccinations the 1 year and 3 year vaccine.

I do not know how good the actual rabies vaccination is good for as the above post says it can be good for 7 years; however on my rabies cerficate it expires when it says it does and I have to renew @ that time in order to get my dog licensed by my city. They look @ the paperwork, not the what you think it expires. Good Luck.

There is a study going on now to see whether rabies vaccinations last for 7-8 years. There's significant information that it does. The problem is, even if it lasts 7-8 years, if your laws in your jurisdiction require it, you must give the shot yearly to protect your dog if they should bite someone. There are consequences for you and your dog if your dog should happen to bite a person and you are outside the boundaries of the law regarding vaccination.

Now, that being said, many jurisdictions state that the renewal paperwork determines how long the vaccination lasts. AND most vaccinations sold are 3 year vaccinations, not 1 year. If you request it from your vet, they usually will put that the dog had a 3 year vaccine and not require you to return for 3 years. There is a special tag for this BUT THE VACCINATION IS EXACTLY THE SAME. Of course, most vets won't come out and tell you this!

So I would check with your vet and see if they'll give you the 3 year paperwork and I would check my local jurisdiction to ensure this is legal and that they don't require a yearly update.

good luck!

First rabie shot is given around 3-4 months old. Next one a year later and from then on they are given every three years for life.

It depends on where you live.

Here in New Mexico the first rabies shot is good for one year and after that every three years.

Check with your Vet.

Depends on your location.

Here in Florida, dogs need them once EVERY year.
In New York, it used to be once every 3 years.

Check with your vet. Rabies shots are not recognized if not given by a licensed veterinarian.

In our state veterinaries are allowed (by law) to give one year or three year shots. The law gets involved because Rabies shots are how they control dog licenses and therefore the taxes involved, call your vet to see which your state allows. PeeTee
