It's commonly called a palatal arch expander. It is used to increase or expand the size of your upper arch. It is used because your upper mouth isn't large enough for all of your teeth when they come in. This appliance just helps your body along by giving it a little push. You or your mom have to crank it with a little key a couple of turns every few days or weeks to engage it and keep it tight to do the work. I know it's not comfortable but you will get used to it. It's usually a little painful for a day or two after engaging it. Have your mom or dad ask your doctor if you can take Advil or Tylenol for the pain during that time. It will all be over before you know it, and one day, it will only be a memory that you think of when you look into the mirror and admire your smile. Good luck! I almost forgot to mention this! Great selection of the horse on the appliance!!!

It's a palatal expander, not a retainer. It is used to widen your upper arch. It will probably get it's job done within a month. Your orthodontist will probably then place a fixed (not removable) appliance to hold the arch in position so that it doesn't try to move back.

Looks like the retainer I had when I was a kid. It did hurt at first, I remember crying and not wanting to wear it. It will get better though and you will be proud of your beutiful smile :) ! Hang in there!

I had braces years ago. Thats a retainer. Did you recently get your braces removed? This is to help your teeth stay in place long after your brcaes are removed because they can shift and look like they did before you started. So its recommended to use the retainer atleast 1 year after the braces have been removed.

Its a retainer.
Its used to keep your teeth straight after taking the braces off.
You probably only have to wear it for 6 months to a year.
