I'm looking to move to Scotland, Edinburgh looks beautiful. What's its reputation between the Scots? What do you think is the best area for sceneery, people and low crime rates?

Well, if the people in Scotland are all as nice as the bunch who answered my question I'm there already!
I'm not bothered by the cold, I love it!
I'm not bothered by snobbish English either, having read Pride and Prejudice and lived in London for 10 years.
Precious advice.

Edinburgh is fine, but expensive to live there. It is a very nice city though. But you have to understand that it is very dark ,cold and wet at this time of year. Summers are nice though.
Most of Scotland is beautiful there are some other nice cities too- Inverness and Perth spring to mind. The West Coast of Scotland is astonishingly beautiful.
The only place with a high crime rate is Greater Glasgow.
The only area I could not recommend is the Aberdeen area. It is a grey, miserable, inhospitable place with residents to match. There's only one street . Plus everything is 10% more expensive than in Edinburgh.
Scotland will welcome you with open arms. enjoy!!

Come to Edinburgh - Its a great open and rolling place to live - the traffic is a bit over the top, but, the amount of greenspaces and leisure facilities is impressive. Glasgow is a cracking city to live in too, however, you'll fall in love with one or the other if you come here. As with the other replies, the further north you go, the better the quality of life, however, as with any remoteness, you may find the facilities a bit few and far between. Good rail, airport, bus links, loads of beaches and some great spaces like I said - Definitely Edinburgh. And if the so called English snobbyness bothers you - Dont live in England. Edinburgh is very cosmopolitan, and diverse. The majority of people who live here are born and bred, and the rest are definitely a mix.

As stated elsewhere, Edinburgh is the only and best city to live in in Scotland.
It is cold and has nasty cold frozen horizontal rain and haar.
Property is expensive.
Because of its universities and training colleges there is lots to do, especially for younger people. Lots of good eating places and pubs.
Public transport, despite what the locals say, is good.
Shopping good and interesting.
Education is good.
People a wee bit snooty but very friendly and helpful to newcomers.
Crime rate is kept low because there is a good chance that you will bump into your attacker on Princes Street on Saturday morning! It still has small town advantages.
There are jobs to be found in Edinburgh, especially in banking and insurance.

Because of the low population compared with land mass, the quality of life in Scotland is very high. Glasgow and Edinburgh are both very sophisticated European cities with much to see and do. In the central belt you are never far from the coast, the countryside or the city and if you want to go even more rural then you are spoilt for choice.
Great people too, but then I would say that wouldn't I.

Scotland is a great place to live. Edinburgh is beautiful but you'll need a lot of cash to buy a house there and it's full of English snobs and American tourists. The scenery gets better the further North you go. Crime rates higher in Glasgow than anywhere else.

Scotland is amazing and has by far the friendliest people in the world, as for low crime rates and sceneary the further north you go the better it gets, im from glasgow myself and like any other big city in the world it has it amazing features and places but also with any city comes crime, edinburgh is the touristy part of scotland eg the castle and such like. But wherever you decide to move to i wish u all the best and im sure the people will welocome u with open arms

i'm an (adopted) Edinburgh kid and I like it right here. Right now it's blowing a howling gale.
The Scots: we sometimes drink too much, but we're straight talking, inventive and industrious. We don't smoke in enclosed public places. We love music, but our men can't dance except in Ceilidhs.
Almost none of us have ever seen a deep fried chocolate bar.
We are very seldom racist, but in some communities we tolerate too much sectarianism.
We have madly changeable weather and great sunsets.
We never ever ever have a bad night out when we wear kilts.
No Scot will ever be happy anywhere that s/he can't see hills from at least one window in his/her dwelling.

You'll find a magical country with magical inhabitants. But you probably won't add to the magic much.
