It's proper etiquette for a gentleman to remove his hat when he goes indoors or is introduced to a lady. I think the underlying rationale is that the hat is designed to protect you from the elements, so once you are indoors, it is needless to continue wearing it. Also, it is a mark of respect to your host, just like removing your hat during the national anthem.
Like a lot of cultural etiquette, the practical reason is not as relevant as the tradition behind it.

You take your hat off in the house or while eating because wearing it implies you are about to go somewhere. The only respect you are showing is that you are happy being there at that time. If they think you are about to leave (because you are dressed to leave) it makes the host uneasy (or at least question your intentions) and that is to be avoided.

It is a respect issue. Just as you take off a hat for the national anthem, in a church, or when greeting a lady. It is rude to have a hat on your head while eating in a restaurant or in a home.

The original purpose of a hat is to cover your head from sun/rain/wind when you are outside. If you wear the hat inside, it sends the message that you intend to go outside, in other words, that you don't plan to stay long. That's why.
Also, caps that teenagers wear often cover the face and impede conversation.

I think it goes a long way back.....starting with not bring lice into the domain.....going on to the hyper manners of the 19th century, and into today's world where you are separating the classes. go to a court and a man leaves his hat on, and he's in big trouble with the judge, in schools gangs use the bill of a cap to show gang affiliations....so for parents of today, it's because I said so, you are not a person I will allow to be disrespectful in my home...when you have kids do as you please.

the hat is a representation of the outer self, the ego.. same as coat n shoes... they are things that reinforce one's personality and the impression they want to make...
conventions made it such that, in a house, we are supposed to show our true self, not hiding behind 'personality reinforcements'.
it is, but only a sign, of showing respect and an impression of at ease with oneself.. i.e. to remove a hat while eating is howing that:
1. i do not hide before you (eye contacts are made clearer
2. i am myself, not an influence of outworld characters (singers, and other influencial artists)
3. i am at ease with simple me, only my true self when with you (no sign of hostility is present)
hope this helps..
ps: would you also mind considering this if your son ask questions you cant find answers?
please, just try to consider it truly..
sometimes, children show us how we foolishly follow rules ancient have imposed on us... children are a way for us to free ourselves from blinded religion and culture...
Lord bless the 'why's' of children...truth always come out from them

It's out of respect.... as far as I was always told as a kid. It's like coming in and leaving your coat or shoes on. Although, some people don't mind it these days, but that was just how I was raised.
