Good question, Check your computer and see if it has the Microsoft sticker on it with your product key. Some older computers have it on the back or on the bottom of the computer. If you don't, contact the manufacture, they can look up your serial number and send you a copy of the restore for less than a new license. Remember that Microsoft does not support windows 98 anymore so you may want to look into the upgrade option. Also many new computers would cost you about 200$ more than an upgrade but you gain speed and more features, so that may not be a bad way to go either.

If you can avoid having to re-install Windows, I would. First try checking Windows files. Go to programs, accessories, system tools, system information, tools, file compare. This will check your system to see if you have any corrupt or missing files. It will prompt you to restore files as needed. This may solve your problem without having to re-install Windows

If this fails........ Check your hardisk. There should be the equivalent of Windows 98 cd. If so, click "setup" in that folder/directory. During installation you will be asked for a serial number, which you should be able to find on a sticker somewhere on the computer.

Good luck and be warned, it can be frustrating.
