Many of the real marble, granite, etc surfaces are very porous and cold. yes they do sell sealers but over a period of time they require more and more maintenance.

A good surface is something that is not porous and can withstand high dampness and traffic. Many of the synthetics available today are fantastic. They are easily cut, inlay-ed, routed and formed in an unlimited number of ways with inconspicuous seams. They are nonporous, stain resistant and easily repairable. Plus a large advantage is that the color is consistent. Something that is very difficult with Marble or granite.

Many of the large "Kitchen" retailers have counter tops. Armstrong, Kraft Maid, Omega, etc.

I would use a synthetic rather than organic.

Mine was a black formica top with oak trim. The formica can stain if a glass is left without a coaster. I worked at another place with a beautiful expensive mahogany bar. The finish looked so worn after a couple years. Another place I worked had heavily shellac-ed medium colored oak. That bar always stayed shiny, so I'd have to go with oak and a billion coats of shellac.

Depends on how much you want to spend. There is good old Formica, that comes in many different colors, types and patterns. There is also granite, Silestone, Corian (these being expensive). Because its a bar and will get spilled on and wet, you need to make it out of a substance that can handle it.

Black java marble, It is a little expensive, but it will never crack or show signs of wear and when it is cleaned it absolutely glows giving your bar the classy look that I am sure you would like to present!
