It can't really be stopped if the food has moisture in it, the water inside it will freeze, creating ice crystals and that burn.

Though vacuum packing it (like with the FoodSaver) might help delay this and keep it longer.

Make sure it's stored properly in something that is air tight. Also limit the time it's in the freezer. Just because it's frozen doesn't mean the quality of the food is going to last forever.
