Going to the salon is always the best option. Don't put drugstore products in your hair. No hair colour is good for your hair obviously but at least they know what they're doing. Also, salon products are better, less damaging and if anything goes wrong, there's a professional there to fix it. Using drugstore products, they're never 100% reliable and they fade a lot quicker and usually dont look as rich as salon product.

If it is a darker shade of brown, you should definitely go to a salon. My hair is naturally light/medium brown and now auburn. I went to a salon at first, then spent too much money on Christmas last year so did it myself and have been ever since (and even my nationally-well-known stylist said the color looks great!).
If you do it yourself, just remember that a warm auburn looks more natural than a cool auburn. I use L'Oreal Preference in 6R and many people think it's natural. You can go to L'Oreal's website (www.lorealparisusa) and it will give you some suggestions on a color to try based on your natural color.

Yes go to a salon and have them color your hair they know how much color to use. They can also show what color you will get or close to with the color you pick.
