Where there is one mouse there are more somewhere in the house. Mice live in colonies.

The safest method of capture, for both dog and mouse, would be a live trap

Please do not use glue traps. They have been found to be such a cruel method of killing that the UK has started a move to get the disgusting things banned from that country. Hopefully the ban will spread.
If you use poison, some way, some how, your dog may find it. And snap traps do not always kill quickly and the animal suffers.

They sell live traps... that would be the best way to trap it without risking your dog getting hurt. Of course then you have to figure out what to DO with the mouse after you catch it. Releasing it in a field or something would be the most compassionate... but not everyone has fields nearby.
In the rare cases I've had to use a trap, I've just put it in a cabinet (usually under the kitchen sink) or back behind the couch (there's only like two inches between my couch and wall), etc... somewhere the mouse hangs out but where other animals are too large to get to.
DONT use poisons, as even if the mouse goes outside (most of the poisons dehydrate the mouse, making it go outside to seek water)... it's still a risk to OTHER animals who might eat it (cats, hawks, etc).
Good luck.

Get one of those new round ones. You place the bait inside the bottom of it & when a mouse goes inside, it slides closed & traps the lil guy in there without killing it. You are then free to let it go outside. I get mice in my basement EVERY winter (house backs to a wooded area) & those work wonders! The BEST bait I've found to work is simply using regular sliced cheese that you would buy at the grocery store & use on a sandwich. I have a dog also & the traps don't harm her. She sniffs at it but even if she managed to flip the thing over she can't get hurt or even get to the bait in it. Another word of advice, do NOT put the trap out in the open. In my personal experience w/ the mice I get every winter, they stay to the edges of the room & usually only venture further out, if at all, at night when it's quiet & there is nobody around. I've never seen them during the day. I wish you luck cause those mice can get annoying!!!

Goto Home Depot and get the audio/sonic mouse/rodent trap. It plugs in and emits audio waves that bother mice (and some birds) as well as roaches and other vermin. The sound is inaudible to humans and does NOT bother dogs. We had a mouse problem and it was taken care of quickly with these plug ins. The dog has not had any ill effects. The packaging is well labelled so you will know which ones are safe for homes with dogs.

I've had great success with this trap in my house:
http://veganstore.com/index.html?stocknumber=266
I've caught over ten mice with it so far and it can be used over and over indefinitely. I have a dog and he often "investigates" the trap, but he has never set it off (and even if he did, it wouldn't really hurt him). Or, you can try making the free homemade humane trap described here:
http://www.helpinganimals.com/wildlife_livingWithMice.asp
If you do live trap mice, please be sure to check the traps several times a day and release the mice promptly, approximately a mile away from your home. It is much more cruel to allow a mouse in a live trap to slowly starve to death than to kill it quickly with a snap trap. When you release the mice, do it in an area with some sheltering bushes or plants. If you are a kind person, you might also leave a little bird seed or oatmeal for them.
The absolute cruelest traps are glue traps. Mice have been known to gnaw off their own limbs and tear off their skin in an effort to escape, as they starve or dehydrate to death or suffocate in the glue. It can take three to five days for them to die. Poison isn't any better, as the mice die slowly and painfully from internal bleeding. It can take up to a week for them to die, and then they smell as they rot behind your walls.
It doesn't take much extra effort to be kind. You will feel better and so will the mice! Good luck!

Best way to get rid of mice:
Set up a tank in your home that's mouse proof. Buy a live mouse trap and when you catch him, put him in th etank. Leave out your mouse trap for a week or more, because your mouse probably has a wife and some kids running around. Mice are pretty protective of their families, and just catching one wont get rid of your problem. Wait till you get at least three of them in the tank, tave them to a field and set them free. If you just get one, he might just go back in! (and never let them out right outside, where do you think they came from!)
Sticky traps are horrib le. The mouse will break his legs trying to get out and then starve to death. That's animal cruelty right there!

Hi Tobie,
I've used the "sticky paper" trap on a couple of occasions which is a more humane way to catch a mouse. You lay the paper down and place a little bit of peanut butter on the paper (not cheese like in the cartoons). The mouse enters the paper and his feet become glued like a fly on flypaper. Local hardware stores should have the paper trap on hand. Hope this helps.

they don't drown difficulty-free. I hate the glue traps after having to address stay stuck mice. My husband ended up putting the stay ones (seize and all) right into a bag, then smashing them with a booted foot. We under no circumstances ever use them back! we've lengthy previous back to the tried and shown quaint snap traps baited with peanut butter. The poison pellets are undesirable too when you consider that now and again they move slowly up into some position inaccessible to die, then one has to sniff their rotting body for the subsequent 3 months till they completely dry out and quit stinking.

You can use the sticky paper traps if you don't mind seeing the mouse still alive when he gets stuck ... I've used them in the past with my cat, it has a weird smell so he doesn't go by them!
You can find them at hardware stores.

Yes, they won't hurt your dog or the mouse! It traps them in a little box and you just take it outside and let it go in a field. Go to your local hardward store to get them.
