Stop helping him with his bills. He will do either of two things. He will either understand and stick around or he will pack up shop. If he runs in the other direction, then he was using you and wasn't worth your time. Either way you will have your answer.
If he is in financial trouble, perhaps he needs to reevaulate his finances and lifestyle and look at some other options such as either getting a better paying job, a second job, and/or cutting back on some of the luxuries.

Easy - be with him but don't pay his bills. If he asks, say "sorry, I make it a rule never to lend out money". If he sticks around or leave then you have your answer.

stop paying his bills. if you're living together, share electric bills and stuff. if you're married or about to be married, ask him to sign a prenup.
