if sytem bought says it comes with digital answering system ..does that mean that phone as well is digital or does the phone have to be say digital as well

The diff between 2.4 and 5.8 GHz phone systems is in the operating frequency band. 5.8 GHz is preferred these days because it stays out of the same band that wireless routers sit at (802.11b,g).

What makes an answering machine digital is the use of solid state memory, as opposed to cassette tapes. I don't think I've seen a tape answering machine in the longest time, so it's pretty safe to say that, if you buy one of those cordless phone systems, the answering machine is digital.
